2010 - 2011 Mayor Councillor R. H. McNicholl Function:
Wednesday June 17, 2010. Launch of Mayoral charity appeal fund 2010-2011

The Mayoress, Mrs Julie McNicholl, launched the Mayoral charity appeal 2010-2011 on Wednesday June 16 at a reception in the Council chamber of Douglas Town Hall.

The two charities chosen to benefit from the appeal during the forthcoming civic year are Kemmyrk (‘shelter’) and Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation.

Introducing the appeal the Mayor, Councillor Ritchie McNicholl JP said there was a long history of fundraising and charitable works attached to the Mayoralty.
Among the funds raised in recent years have been:

  • £6000 for Isle of Man Anti Cancer;

  • £3000 for Woman’s Aid;

  • £8000 for Hospice Isle of Man;

  • £6000 for Ronald McDonald House;

  • £3000 for Crossroads Caring for Carers;

  • £3000 for Autism in Mann;

  • £3000 for Manx Heart Support.

In a brief outline of her two chosen charities the Mayoress explained that Kemmyrk was a Manx homelessness charity working to reduce homelessness in the Island and supporting the homeless. Kemmyrk works with people who have no accommodation and those living in unsafe or insecure conditions.  Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation (CHF) was founded by the family of Craig Lunt who died suddenly at the age of 25 from an undiagnosed heart defect. The charity raises money to bring qualified staff (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and specialist screening equipment to the Isle of Man on a regular basis.

Some donations for this year’s appeal have already been received including £500 from ILS Fiduciaries and £620 from miscellaneous donors.
Fundraising events planned include:

  • MV Karina cruises on August 7 and September 4;

  • Quiz night in the Outback (Date in September to be confirmed);

  • A collection during the Christmas lights switch-on ceremony on Thursday November 25;

  • Mayor’s variety show March 26 (venue to be confirmed);

  • Mayoral Ball April 30 (venue to be confirmed).

George Campbell, a member of the Mayoral charity appeal fund committee invited those present to pledge their support in whatever way they could, be it volunteering to help at an event, organising an event, donating cash or prizes or simply buying tickets to some of the many events planned for the coming months.
