2010 - 2011 Mayor Councillor R. H. McNicholl Function: Friday July 9 2010. Reception for students from Number One High School, Liuyang
Students from the ‘fireworks-manufacturing capital of the world’ – Liuyang in Hunan Province – were guests of the Mayor during their 10-day visit to the Isle of Man.
The students, from Liuyang’s Number One High School, were in the Island as part of an exchange agreement with Ballakermeen High School which has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with the Chinese school.
During the reception in the Mayor’s parlour the school’s principal, Zhao Siwei, presented Councillor McNicholl with a gift of a carved piece of ‘chrysanthemum stone’ - a fossil indigenous to the Hunan region. In return the Mayor presented the principal with a set of cufflinks and a plaque bearing the Borough Arms.
