The Service of Remembrance at St Thomas’s Church was co-ordinated by the Archdeacon of the Isle of Man, the Venerable Andrew Brown and assisted by the Vicar of St Thomas’, Reverend Ian Brady.
The service was attended by the Mayor of Douglas, Councillor David Ashford, JP., the Mayoress Mrs Sylvia Ashford, the Town Clerk and Chief Executive Ms Kathleen Rice, Council Leader David Christian JP., together with Members and Officers of Douglas Borough Council, Mr Peter Fletcher, President of the Royal British Legion, Douglas Branch, representatives from the Isle of Man Government and the Armed Forces, and the general public.
The service concluded, the congregation proceeded to the War Memorial to observe two minutes’ silence at 11am followed by a short service conducted by Canon Brown and the placing of wreaths led by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Mr Adam Wood followed by His Worship the Mayor.
His Worship said: ‘The annual Douglas Remembrance Sunday service, which regularly attracts crowds in excess of 300, provides an opportunity for us to pay tribute to all those brave servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, not only in the First and Second World Wars, but also in the many other conflicts that have threatened the freedom of communities across the globe.
'The service is a time of reflection, a time to stand and remember. It brings together young and old alike to pay tribute to the fallen. Importantly it allows the Manx nation to pause for a moment and come together to demonstrate our support for and offer thanks to those courageous men and women of the Isle of Man who, today, are putting their lives on the line for us and are engaged in theatres of war through the world to protect the freedom we are privileged to enjoy.’
