A Partnership Approach in North Quay     Click here to listen to this pageListen to this page

Douglas Corporation is one of the bodies working towards the improvement of North Quay.  The project aims to create a high quality pedestrian environment along the quay so that it becomes a more pleasant place to walk, meet and enjoy the many pubs and restaurants.  In particular, it is an ambition of the project to encourage and assist the businesses on North Quay to make use of wider pavements for outdoor seating areas.  The section of North Quay from Banks’ Hill to Quines Corner was completed last year.  The next section from Quine’s Corner to St Mathew’s Church is due to start in March 2007.  Douglas Corporation has improved the street lighting along Bridge Road and the western end of North Quay to complement the Department of Transport’s re-paving scheme.  The Corporation is also responsible for the blue LED lighting in the new handrails.

Douglas Corporation also funds the majority of Douglas Development Partnership.  The Partnership has been responsible for co-ordinating the design of the project through the production of a Quayside Design Guide, Lighting Strategy and Public Art Strategy.  The Partnership has also led the consultation with local businesses through the Quayside Development Group.  The full benefit of these strategies will become apparent with the implementation of the next phase of the project.  In particular, watch out for the sculptural seats commissioned from local artists.
