Sowing the seeds for success     Click here to listen to this pageListen to this page

More than 7000 bedding geraniums are being sown at Douglas Borough Council’s Ballaughton nursery as part of preparations for the town’s bid in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.

Nursery Manager Graham Newsome said: ‘Since the start of the year we have produced a soil shed full of compost – amounting so far to around 50 cubic metres, made up of 50 per cent organic material from our own compost combined with sterilised soil, sand and fertilisers. We have also lined and filled with compost most of the 350 hanging baskets, begun general seed sowing of annuals at 50 seedlings to a tray, and are progressing our planned maintenance programme.’

Council Leader David Christian said: ‘Douglas is proud to be representing the Isle of Man in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition and I have every confidence the parks section will, once again, provide outstanding support.

‘However, while the Council does all it can, it needs the commitment of the community to ensure the town looks at its best throughout the year.  Britain in Bloom is not just about floral displays, at its core are community participation and environmental responsibility. As well as horticultural achievement the judges will be looking for initiatives that bring long-term quality of life benefits to the town. With this in mind I would appeal to all residents, businesses and visitors for their support as we build on our success in 2008 when the town gained a Britain in Bloom silver award and an RHS discretionary award for encouraging tourism to the capital.’

Britain in Bloom judging will take place between August 2 and 13. The awards will be announced on September 29 at a venue to be confirmed.
