Douglas on 'green alert' in final days before Britain in Bloom judging     Click here to listen to this pageListen to this page

With the Britain in Bloom judges visiting the capital on Monday August 9 Douglas is on ‘green alert’ in the final days of preparation.

Key to Douglas’s Britain in Bloom bid is the route along which the judges will be escorted, some sections on foot, others by car. The route will begin at Douglas Golf Course and will include the Café (Middle) River biodiversity project, the North Quay, Victoria Street, the promenade and sunken gardens, Victoria Road, Noble’s Park and Derby Square, finishing at the Sefton Hotel.

Council Leader David Christian said: ‘The route selected reflects Britain in Bloom’s heightened focus on community participation and environmental responsibility and also the importance the competition places on retail and commercial as well as residential horticultural achievement.

‘This year’s bid has been distinguished by an exceptional level of support from the wider community; not only from volunteer and charitable groups, but also from schools, retail and business organisations, the hospitality industry and local residents, all working in partnership with the Council to help Douglas “go for gold”.

‘Douglas is proud to be representing the Isle of Man in Britain in Bloom on August 9 and I would urge everyone to help make the capital look at its finest on the day. However, our commitment to create a greener, more pleasant town extends far beyond August 9; it is a year-round undertaking and I am equally proud of the progress we have made in recent years in raising standards of environmental quality across the capital, an achievement on which we can build with the support of the Douglas community as a whole.’
