When Mike Crellin, Douglas Borough Council’s Tramways Superintendent was interviewed in June by pupils from Onchan Primary School for the Tell Me Project’s ‘Transport through the Ages’ topic the interest he generated in the horse trams was such that the whole of year 5 have now visited the stables and taken a tram ride.
On July 21 the pupils were given a tour of the stables by Mr Crellin where they enjoyed the opportunity to get close to - and help groom - some of the horses. The children and teachers then boarded two horse trams for their ride along Douglas promenade, organised by Tramways Operations Supervisor Peter Cannon and his team. Teacher Amy Bairstow said: ‘We’re very grateful to the Council. The children had a great time learning all about the horses and they thoroughly enjoyed their ride on the tram.’
The Tell Me Project is an intergenerational education project where young people interview adults on a range of topics ranging from farming to finance, transport to tourism. The project is a Freedom to Flourish initiative co-sponsored by the H&S Davidson Trust and AXA Isle of Man. Core partners are Age Concern Isle of Man and the Isle of Man Department of Education and Children, supported by Manx Radio, Isle of Man Newspapers, Manx Telecom and Manx National Heritage.
The 2010 horse tram service operates daily from 9am to 7pm until Sunday September 12. Horse tram ‘experience’ days are now also available. For details contact Georgia Gage, 696300.
