Douglas City Council has welcomed the recent designation of Douglas Head as a Conservation Area, recognising the area’s significant historical, architectural and cultural importance to the City.
Douglas Head has a long and important association with the Isle of Man’s tourism industry, while reflecting the Island’s industrial and commercial heritage. Its distinctive character and setting make it an important part of Douglas’ history and identity.
The designation has been confirmed by the Isle of Man Government’s Cabinet Office following two public consultations, both of which demonstrated overwhelming support for the proposal.
Douglas Head joins a further 20 designated Conservation Areas across the Isle of Man, including the nine existing Conservation Areas within the capital.
Conservation Area designation does not prevent development but development can only take place where it is appropriate and contributes to the preservation and enhancement of the area’s historic character and appearance. The designation is intended to help safeguard the qualities that make Douglas Head special, ensuring it can be enjoyed by residents and visitors and appreciated by future generations.
Douglas City Council will continue to support awareness of the area’s historic significance
through information boards and appropriate signage, helping to ensure the new Conservation Area status is recognised and understood.
