Fireworks will return to the capital next month with a spectacular Christmas-themed display.
It’s been confirmed Douglas City Council’s annual display will take place on Thursday, November 26 at 7pm with a festive theme to mark the start of Christmas late-night shopping in Douglas.
The event was originally scheduled for November 5 but had to be postponed due to issues affecting the transportation of fireworks to the Island.
The new date has been chosen to coincide with the first Thursday of late-night festive shopping, giving Islanders the opportunity to enjoy the fireworks alongside the shops, restaurants and hospitality venues taking part in the Christmas celebrations.
To accommodate the show, parking along the promenade will be suspended for the evening. However, the local authority will provide alternative parking options and has arranged for the Bottleneck and Shaw’s Brow car parks to be free for residents from 5pm. The Department of Infrastructure has also offered to make Chester Street car park free of charge as the closure is implemented.
Regeneration and Community Committee Chair, Councillor Natalie Byron-Teare, said: ‘We’re delighted to be able to confirm a new date for our annual fireworks display and look forward to bringing the community together for what promises to be a fantastic evening.
‘While external issues meant the fireworks could not be brought to the Island in time for early November, we’re pleased to have secured an alternative date that offers something special for residents and visitors to enjoy.
‘By aligning the event with the first Thursday of late-night shopping, we hope people will come
into Douglas, enjoy the fireworks, explore the fantastic range of local shops and make the most of the city’s hospitality. It’s a great opportunity to support our local businesses, soak up the festive atmosphere and make a real evening of it.
‘We’d like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience, as well as our partners for helping us make the new arrangements possible. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Douglas for a memorable start to the Christmas season.’
