Douglas City Council’s Community Awards Scheme recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community. The awards celebrate those whose dedication, kindness and commitment have had a positive impact on the lives of others and helped make Douglas a better place to live.

Award categories

Community Champion Award

The Community Champion Award recognises an individual who has made a significant and lasting contribution to their local community through voluntary work, community involvement or acts of dedication.

Young Hero Award

The Young Hero Award celebrates a young person aged 15 years or under who has made a significant contribution to their local community through their actions, commitment or achievements.

Who Can Be Nominated?

Anyone can submit a nomination for an individual they believe deserves recognition.

To be eligible:

• The nominee must live within the City of Douglas.
• Nominators and seconders do not need to live within the City.

How To Nominate

Nominations are invited annually.

To make a nomination, please complete the application form and return it by email or post before Friday 23^rd October 2026. Democraticservices@douglas.gov.im / Democratic Services, City Hall, Ridgeway Street, Douglas IM99 1AD.

Following the closing date, all nominations will be considered by an independent judging panel comprising:

• The Mayor of Douglas
• One elected Council Member
• One independent person appointed by the Mayor

The panel will select one recipient for the Community Champion Award and one recipient for the Young Hero Award.

Nominees and nominators can expect to be notified of the outcome in November. Successful recipients will be invited to receive their award at a presentation in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Judging Criteria

There is no fixed definition of what constitutes a significant contribution to the local community. Every nomination is considered on its own merits.

Examples of contributions may include:

• Long-term and sustained service to the local community or a particular group within it (although exceptional shorter-term contributions will also be considered).
• Inspiring achievements or actions that have positively influenced others.
• Activities or initiatives that have benefited the City of Douglas or its residents.
• Demonstrating dedication, compassion, leadership or commitment in helping others.

When assessing nominations, the judging panel will consider:

• The individual’s level of commitment.
• Any challenges or obstacles they have overcome.
• The positive impact their contribution has had on other people and the wider community.
