Final chance to nominate Community Champion and Young Hero

There is just a couple of weeks remaining to nominate someone for the Douglas City Council 2026 Community Awards.

Now in its fifth year, the initiative shines a spotlight on the unsung heroes who make a real difference to life in the capital.

The Awards, for which nominations are accepted until October 31, recognise a Community  Champion – a Douglas ratepayer who has made a significant difference to the local community – and a Young Hero – a young person aged 15 or under who resides in Douglas and has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

The criteria is wide open and can range from someone who supports vulnerable or disadvantaged people to inspirational mentors who empower young people.

It can include dedicated volunteers and tireless fundraisers who selflessly give their time to help others, whether that be in musical, sporting or other endeavours, or environmental advocates  working to protect our natural surroundings.

Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Steven Crellin JP, will chair a three-person panel to determine the winners, who will be announced at a prize presentation later in the year.

He said: ‘Recognising those who make a genuine difference to the lives of others is one of the  most rewarding things we can do as a Council. So often, these individuals don’t seek recognition
– they simply see something that needs doing and step forward to help.

‘These awards are our opportunity to say thank you and to celebrate the incredible Islanders who give their time, energy and compassion to make Douglas a stronger, kinder and more connected  community.

‘We have already received a healthy list of nominations and, with just a few weeks until  nominations close, there is still time to put someone forward. It could be a neighbour, a friend, a colleague, a volunteer, a young person or simply someone who you believe deserves to have  their contribution recognised.

‘It is truly inspiring to hear about those who go above and beyond every day to make our city a better place. I am sure there are more remarkable stories out there and I would encourage  everyone to take a few minutes to nominate someone who deserves their moment in the  spotlight. I already know that choosing this year’s Community Champion and Young Hero is  going to be a very difficult, but hugely enjoyable task.’

Nomination forms can be found at: https://www.douglas.gov.im/2026/07/31/help-us-find-douglas- next-community-champion-or-young-hero/

The individual must live in Douglas, although nominations can be made from all Island residents. For further information, e-mail: democraticservices@douglas.gov.im or telephone 696311.
