Douglas gardeners put on blooming good show

Gardeners in the Borough of Douglas have, yet again, demonstrated their horticultural talents, with this year’s Douglas in Bloom competition unearthing some outstanding entries.

At the prize presentation held at Noble’s Park Pavilion His Worship the Mayor Councillor John Skinner JP praised the entrants for their hard work which made a welcome contribution to the environment and Douglas ‘a better place for everyone.’

Echoing His Worship’s sentiments Regeneration and Community Committee Chairman Councillor Stephen Pitts said: ‘I spent two great days in July going around the gardens as one of the competition judges. Everyone who entered did a fantastic job and are to be congratulated, and for next year we’d particularly like to see more schools entering.’

 

First-place competition winners were:

 

  • Mrs Dobinson, St Heliers: Hotels and Guesthouses without Gardens.
  • Mrs McGuire, Trevelyan Hotel: Hotels and Guesthouses with Gardens.
  • Mr Davies, Westminster Drive: Private Houses with Gardens.
  • The Strand Shopping Centre: Business Premises.
  • Ballacottier Primary School: Public/Community Garden.
  • Mr Baines: Best Douglas Council Property.
  • Mr Cooke, Murray House, Lord Street: Conservation, Wildlife and Biodiversity.
  • Mr Quine, Harcroft Avenue: Secret Garden.
  • Mr Sweeney, plot number 10: Most Improved Allotment.
  • Mr Gerrard, plot number 3: Most Productive Allotment.
  • Ballacottier Primary School: Most Imaginative Floral Display.
