Long-Serving Library Staff Recognised for Service to the Borough

Shirley Moore and Vicky Magill started work at Douglas Borough Library – now the Henry Bloom Noble Library – in February 1977 and March 1979 respectively.

Since then, they have both worked in different areas and seen many changes to the services the library provides, as well as developments in the wider world of librarianship.

To mark their retirement following combined careers spanning six decades, a special ceremony was held in the Mayor’s parlour, attended by colleagues, councillors and officers.

Borough Librarian Jan Macartney paid tribute to the work of both employees.

‘It is a cliché but it is true to say that Shirley and Vicky’s retirement really does mark the end of an era and the library won’t be quite the same without them.

‘As so many customers have alluded to, they have been the front face of the library for many and their remarkable service, approaching a century between them, is a truly wonderful achievement.’

Council leader Claire Wells added: ‘Both Shirley and Vicky have seen so much change and contributed so much to the history of Douglas Library and we all wish them long and happy retirements.’
